- I'd disagree - Claris is still a part of Apple, and is still
- successful as a software-only division/subsidiary (it's no Microsoft,
- but Microsoft isn't the only OS/applications company out there, so it
- doesn't have to be another Microsoft to be successful).
- And last I heard, Apple Printers and Scanners/QuickTake camera
- lines were still doing well. The Newton hasn't been a roaring success,
- but has very strong vertical-market penetration in some areas.
- Remember - Apple isn't just Macontoshes. Just like NeXT has done
- better than ever (it's at least become profitable) after jettisoning
- *it's* hardware (and unlike Apple, it had no software only division -
- it didn't have the "company model to be software-only", as you say,
- yet it succeeded in that transition with far fewer resources than
- Apple has).
-
- One other major difference between Apple and Commodore - Apple
- actually continues to bring out timely new and competitive products.
- Commodore management never seemed to think that was a very good
- idea.
