  22.     I'd disagree - Claris is still a part of Apple, and is still
  23. successful as a software-only division/subsidiary (it's no Microsoft,
  24. but Microsoft isn't the only OS/applications company out there, so it
  25. doesn't have to be another Microsoft to be successful).
  26.     And last I heard, Apple Printers and Scanners/QuickTake camera
  27. lines were still doing well. The Newton hasn't been a roaring success,
  28. but has very strong vertical-market penetration in some areas.
  29.     Remember - Apple isn't just Macontoshes. Just like NeXT has done
  30. better than ever (it's at least become profitable) after jettisoning
  31. *it's* hardware (and unlike Apple, it had no software only division -
  32. it didn't have the "company model to be software-only", as you say,
  33. yet it succeeded in that transition with far fewer resources than
  34. Apple has).

  36.     One other major difference between Apple and Commodore - Apple
  37. actually continues to bring out timely new and competitive products.
  38. Commodore management never seemed to think that was a very good
  39. idea.
